Snowflake

Snowflake

Snowflake was the world's only known albino gorilla. He became a symbol of Barcelona after his arrival from Equatorial Guinea in 1966. His fame and influence has been disseminated into popular culture to become far more than a caged animal. He has a chapter in Italo Calvino's novel Mr Palomar, he crops up on television programmes such as Nature special on him and there is a Spanish cartoon, Snowy, based on him. Snowflake was also the inspiration for the movements and anthropomorphisms of Peter Jackson's King Kong. In the UK he is most widely known as the star of Basement Jaxx's album cover for Rooty. He is also the centrepiece of my art-zoo exhibition, Freianlage.
