Note: 'Sleep of Ulro' is based on the set designs from the film 'The Cabinet of Dr Caligari'. Directed in 1919 by Robert Wiene, 'Caligari' was designed by Hermann Warm who enlisted Walter Reimann and Walter Roehrig, fellow members of Berlin's Der Sturm group, to act as art directors. Spatial and temporal disorientations invoke Caligari in a conspiracy between sets, costumes and the activation of cognitive disturbance in performance, to refract and project the dream as aesthetic protagonist. Caligari is not 'seen' but is, as materialised and transformed, witness from the unnameable, the Geist from which would spring the arc of modernity. (Peter Lewis)
